Awakening the Senses · Stage 1 · Intrapersonal

Your Senses Are Horses. Who's Holding the Reins?

indriyāṇi hayān āhuḥ

“the senses, they say, are the horses”

Katha Upanishad 1.3.3–4

You've opened your phone 80 times today, and most of those times you didn't decide to. Your thumb did.

In the Katha Upanishad, the sages describe your body as a chariot and your senses as horses. Your mind is the reins and your intellect is the driver. Horses aren't bad. They're powerful. But horses with no driver just run toward whatever looks shiniest: the next notification, the next reel, the next snack.

Being numb isn't the problem. Being pulled is. Before you can choose what's good for you over what just feels good, you have to notice what's pulling you.

So this week isn't about willpower. It's about awareness. You can't steer horses you don't see.

Tomorrow: the body itself, the chariot those horses are pulling.

Today’s practice

Set three random alarms today. When one goes off, stop and name one thing you see, one thing you hear, and one thing you feel in your body, all in 10 seconds. That's you, taking the reins back.

Midday anchor

30 seconds, three breaths, one sense check.

Tonight’s mirror

Which sense pulled hardest at you today, and when?
